Website migration from Shopify to WooCommerce

If you have decided to move your online shop from Shopify to WooCommerce, you have made the right decision. With the wealth of tools, the flexibility, the cost savings and the scalability of WordPress for websites, it becomes the best choice. Whatever way your online shop is built, whether in Shopify or developed with PrestaShop or Magento, migrating to WooCommerce is an advantageous solution, just like migrating your site to WordPress.

Do you think migrating your shop is a complicated process? The truth is that it is not, as long as you follow a clear methodology, whether you are undertaking a PrestaShop to Shopify migration project or a Shopify to WooCommerce one.

How to migrate from Shopify to WooCommerce?

A Shopify to WooCommerce migration can be carried out in two different ways: manually, or automatically with an extension.

Manual method

It is generally done in six steps:

Step 1: choose a web hosting service

It is crucial to choose a reliable, reputable company that works for the long term. WooCommerce is installed on a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org), not on a free WordPress.com site.

Step 2: install WordPress and WooCommerce

Once you have your hosting service, you need to install WordPress, then the WooCommerce extension from the WordPress Plugins menu.

Step 3: export your Shopify data

The data you need to export from Shopify are the products, the orders and the customers. Here is how to export the three CSV files of your Shopify shop:

  • Open your Shopify dashboard
  • Go to the "Products" tab.
  • Then click the Export button
  • Do the same in the "Orders" and "Customers" tabs.

Step 4: importing your data from Shopify into WooCommerce

Once you have the Shopify CSV file, log in to the admin of your WordPress site. Then go to the Products menu. At the top of this screen there is an Import button: click it and import the CSV file. The columns of the Shopify file do not have the same names as WooCommerce's: you will have to map them during the import. The WooCommerce importer only handles products; orders and customers require an extension or a migration service.

Step 5: design your shop

Now it is time to design your target shop.

Step 6: integrating a payment gateway

To work properly with WooCommerce, you need a payment gateway. PayPal and Stripe are among the most widely used solutions in France and worldwide.

Automatic method

Third-party services such as Cart2Cart offer an easy way to migrate all the data of the Shopify content to a new WooCommerce shop; Cart2Cart also offers a WordPress extension.

Note that a fully automated migration of the Shopify shop to a WordPress shop with Cart2Cart is not free. However, this service gives you the opportunity to run a test migration.

Shopify's weaknesses

Like PrestaShop and Magento, Shopify is a popular platform for creating online shops, powering several million shops, for several reasons, including how easy it is to create your e-commerce site. Despite these advantages, Shopify also has some drawbacks:

  • It is not an open source platform: this means no one can access the software's source code, study it, modify it and share it. In addition, you depend on Shopify for changes, and managing and importing redirects into Shopify is more complex. Moreover, it costs more.
  • Payment is upfront: you have to make a payment (depending on the plan you choose), whether or not you have sold a product.
  • There are fees and extra payments: after paying your Shopify subscription, you will pay fees on each transaction, in particular for your customers' card payments (depending on the plan you have chosen).
  • Email is not included: Shopify does not host mailboxes, but you can set up email forwarding or use a third-party service.
  • Products and themes are limited: on this e-commerce platform you can sell anything, giving the user size, colour and material options. But if you need to explain other properties of your product or service to the customer, you will have to use third-party apps (or a custom design). The same applies to choosing one of their themes to design your shop.
  • Few SEO features: the URL structure is imposed (/products/, /collections/, /pages/), which limits control over the site structure. This can become an SEO problem, because a large share of an online shop's visitors usually comes from organic traffic.
  • Multilingual depends on apps: Shopify lets you sell in several languages, but translation goes through apps, often third-party and paid.

Do not let Shopify's constraints hold back your business growth. Our tool makes the redirects of your migration to WooCommerce easier.

WooCommerce's strengths

The WooCommerce plugin has become a major competitor among e-commerce platforms. It meets important requirements for any online business and offers huge customisation capacity, not to mention its large community. It has many strengths:

  • WooCommerce is an open source platform;
  • it offers many possibilities for improvement, customisation and features;
  • it has a very attentive, boundless community;
  • it offers a wide choice of WordPress themes;
  • WooCommerce is a free extension, but you need hosting for your WordPress and your data, and many add-on extensions are paid.

Why move from Shopify to WooCommerce?

The reasons for a Shopify to WooCommerce migration are very varied, but it is without doubt a much more complete and independent platform.

You are probably asking yourself the question because lately you have seen many people create online shops on Shopify. There are only two reasons for this:

  • They invest heavily in advertising.
  • Although it limits you in the long run, at the start it is one of the quickest and easiest options for having an online shop.

However, neither of these two reasons shows that it is the best platform for creating online shops. They simply benefit from a good marketing strategy.
